About Us
Iowa's Electric Cooperatives Iowa Electric Cooperatives Iowa's electric cooperatives provide electricity to approximately 650,000 Iowans in each of the state's 99 counties. We pride ourselves on being member-owned, not-for-profit cooperatives supplying reliable and affordable electricity in ways that minimize the impacts to our natural environment.

We know that we must find a way to have a clean environment AND a healthy economy. We are doing that by investing in energy efficiency and adding renewable energy resources. But, the cap-and-trade plan currently being considered by Congress reaches too far, too fast; and the impact to energy consumers will be significant. Any additional costs resulting from this plan will ultimately be paid by consumers, in some cases adding thousands of dollars per year to electric bills. Iowa's electric cooperatives support a balanced solution to reversing the effects of climate change. We need a policy that reduces carbon dioxide emissions in a way that softens the impact to already soaring energy costs and focuses on technology development to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. We do not need a policy that artificially drives up the cost of energy by forcing electric cooperatives to compete with large corporations and speculators.

Reliable and affordable electricity is vital to jumpstart recovery from the current economic crisis. We believe Iowans can and must influence the debate on energy policy legislation by contacting members of Congress. Working together, we can convince Congress to find a balanced solution that achieves real environmental goals without draining family budgets or further harming our economy.
